Unreal Engine: Revolutionizing the Future of TV & Film

The Unreal Engine is shaking up traditional production workflows—bringing immersive, real-time visual effects, cost-effective virtual sets, and infinite creative possibilities to TV and film. By seamlessly blending real and virtual worlds, Unreal Engine is leading a new era in content creation, shaping how we produce and experience entertainment.

L.A. Castle Studios and ABQ Castle Studios: Leading the Unreal Engine Revolution

No one wonders “Why Unreal Engine?” or “Why virtual sets?” anymore—productions like Disney’s The Mandalorian and L.A. Castle Studios’ own shows prove the power and flexibility of real-time virtual sets for every kind of content. Today’s real question is: “How can production companies leverage Unreal Engine and virtual sets to be spectacular, easy, and on the cutting edge of technology?”

The answer: Film at L.A. Castle Studios and ABQ Castle Studios.

The Safest, Greenest Way to Produce

Directors and producers choose L.A. Castle Studios and ABQ Castle Studios because we bring visions to life without environmental downsides. No trees cut for set construction, no travel emissions, and you can keep your crew as small as you like. Our Unreal Engine setups are second to none—creating amazing productions while minimizing your carbon footprint.

The Multi-Camera Advantage

Faster shoots, fewer takes, limitless angles.

Our stage is fully multi-camera enabled, meaning you can capture every angle at the same time. On scripted sets, this speeds up production and reduces the burden on talent—often one flawless take is all you need. For talk and news-style shows, multi-camera is essential. Even better, our patented virtual set technology can make scenes indistinguishable from on-location shoots without the associated costs.

The Multi-Feed Breakthrough

1. Live composite. This feed shows the talent, environment (set), and any practical set pieces all together. The L.A. Castle Studios and ABQ Castle Studios live composites are the top in their class and are what most of our clients use when creating their final deliverable for the viewer.

2. Background only. This feed is the moving background, tracked with each camera, minus talent and any practical set elements. This feed is important because it allows for the post production team to make modifications or corrections to the set without affecting talent or other elements.

3. Foreground only. This feed captures the production without the live-composited set and is important for making color and other adjustments to talent and/or other elements without affecting the set or scene overall.

4. Matte and tracking data. This feed displays as white for composited elements and black for non-composited elements. Post-production teams will use this feed to correct any of the rare imperfections that might pop up in the scene.

With twelve total feeds, you gain far more control than you’d ever have on a traditional set.

Everything You Need, Under One Roof

From cameras, audio, and lighting to news desks and set furniture, we’ve got it all—plus integration for any specialized equipment you bring along. Our spacious stage, complete with a movie-theater-sized LED video wall, lets you see real-time composites from every angle. This way, cast and crew always know exactly how the final shot will look.

Real Shadows for Total Reality

Shadows can make or break a virtual production. We’ve mastered the “art of the shadow” to ensure scenes look exactly like they were shot on-location. By matching our physical lighting to the angle of the virtual light in Unreal Engine, shadows line up perfectly—creating seamless realism.

Beyond the Background: Total Scene Immersion

Don’t limit Unreal to just a backdrop. We encourage you to bring as many practical elements into the scene as you want—a real table for a restaurant shoot, an actual bed for a bedroom scene, or a physical lamppost for an outdoor setup. Mix these real objects with virtual environments, and watch it all come together in one live composite.
